The 3 Biggest Problems of Warehouse Management

You’d think that, after managing warehouses for centuries, we humans would have it down to a fine art by now. But age-old problems in warehouse management exist, and new ones pop up regularly.

The most serious impact of warehousing problems is that they erode your bottom line. And, worst of all, they can do so invisibly.

The Largest Problems of Warehouse Management

The first step in solving your warehouse management issues is to identify them. That might seem obvious, but it is a far less common practice than most of us think.

  1. Recognizing that Problems Exist – Your warehouse has been running ‘trouble-free’ for years. You have enough space, but not too much. Lost stock isn’t a big issue. And you can find everything relatively quickly. If it ain’t broke, why fix it?  But, for example, if your warehouse management system isn’t up-to-date, or it isn’t being fully or properly used, you have a problem. Why? Because you’re not taking advantage of the tools at hand to minimize the costs of running the warehouse.
  2. The Space and Your Processes are not Optimized – Even if it is running well, is your warehouse space properly organized? Are your processes for handling both incoming and outgoing goods as efficiently as possible? Space and process optimization must be constant in managing any warehouse.
  3. Managing Your Warehouse is a Drain on Your Core Business – You sell products that must be warehoused, so it makes sense to run a warehouse. But, if managing that warehouse as efficiently as possible draws resources away from your core business, the part that actually makes money, then that might be your biggest problem of all.
